Wellness is dynamic progression of being aware of and making choices that leads to a pleasing and fulfilling life. It can also be defined as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. It is aware of your capabilities to live a healthier, satisfactory and more balanced existence. Wellness is the value or condition of having a healthy body and mind which is brought about by measured effort.
Maintaining an optimal level of wellness is absolutely crucial to live a higher quality life. Wellness is of great concern because everything we do and every emotion we feel is related to our wellbeing. It is therefore critical and important for every individual to achieve maximum wellness in order to subdue stress, reduce risks of illness and ensure positive interactions. Wellness is a proactive life process utilizing awareness and decisions towards a healthy, fulfilling and balanced lifestyle.
There are eight dimensions of wellness; occupational, emotional, spiritual, environmental, financial, social and intellectual. Each proportion of wellness have a relationship with each other and contribute equally to achieving better wellbeing. Emotional wellness involves one having a good understanding of one’s emotions and managing stress effectively. It is of significance to be attentive when it comes to self-care, reducing stress and relaxing so that one can grow from experiences. It could be defined as the potention to having awareness of our personal feelings, coping with them and not being in denial, looking at alife from a positive perspective despite it always disappointing us. Environmental wellness promotes a peaceful existence in our environment and encourages us to live in harmony while taking care of it. This therefore contribute to our interaction with nature and personal surrounding. Spiritual wellness can be expressed through religion and it helps us develop a set of values that allows us seek meaning and purpose in life.
Financial wellness involves one learning and knowing how to manage their finances to fit into their expenses. Financial constraints at most times is the top stress causing factor amongst people. Someone having financial stabilities are at most times happy with life and satisfied compared to their counterparts.
Intellectual wellness is having an open mind when handling situations, embracing new ideas and continuing to expand your knowledge.
Occupational wellness enables one to achieve satisfaction and enrichment from their jobs. Social wellness gives us the ability to interact with other people and perform our roles in the society.
Physical wellness on the other hand involves having and maintaining a healthy body, it is related to seeking professional care when and if needed.
